Day 9 (02/06/08) Blagaj (Bosnia Herzegovina) to Nis (Serbia)
Serbia border – Green card needed on entry to Serbia. Had to buy at border and cost us E120
Part 2 – The afternoon.
Travelled: 619km
Debbie: We eventually got to the right border and asked to buy a green card. It ended up costing an arm and a leg and we were sure that they were adding on a little extra for their back pocket but who were we to argue with a non English speaking border official? It also took 5 of them about 40 minutes to issue the A5 sheet. We found the roads in Serbia to be relatively good and well signed BUT in Serbian! They have their own alphabet so we got lost a few times and had to ask for directions. Some Serbians speak a bit of German so we managed to communicate a bit better with broken Afrikaans and with a few of the German words I know. All day we looked for somewhere to camp and found nothing – not one campsite. We even asked a local if it was appropriate to ask a farmer if we could camp in his field and were told that it was not the done thing to do. At 7pm (lucky it was still light) we found a seedy motel and we convinced Mr Security to let us camp in the car park. We wanted to stay in our tent rather than in a seedy trucker stop motel ... We didn’t find the Serbians to be very friendly people.
